Sinopse  

Em Setembro de 1986, o Comité de Cooperação Nórdica para a Investigação Humanística apresentou um relatório sobre a investigação da religião nórdica na região nórdica. O relatório apontou a necessidade de esforços intensificados de pesquisa na área, declarando que se trata de um assunto que deveria ser da maior importância para os estudiosos nórdicos. 

O Instituto Donner para a História Religiosa e Cultura reagiu a este apelo, organizando um simpósio sobre o tema no ano seguinte, juntamente com a organização de pesquisa filológica Comitê de Cooperação Nórdica para Estudos de Nomes de Lugares (NORNA).

Os artigos incluídos no volume representam assim duas categorias principais: em primeiro lugar, a investigação sobre crenças religiosas pré-cristãs e práticas de culto na região nórdica e, em segundo lugar, a investigação sobre nomes de lugares do mesmo período e a luz que podem lançar sobre crenças e cultos na era pré-cristã.
