O livro explora a resposta dos vivos ao lidar com a morte de uma criança. Esta resposta está fortemente ligada aos sistemas de crenças e à preocupação com o destino do falecido na vida após a morte. Caso os ritos atípicos para crianças sejam realmente considerados normais, uma vez que são típicos da sua faixa etária, diferindo apenas dos dos adultos, e talvez simplesmente reflita interpretações do passado centradas nos adultos? 

Os artigos do volume discutem estas questões, concentrando-se nas práticas funerárias juvenis na Europa e no Oriente Próximo durante a pré-história e a proto-história recentes. A interpretação do normativo, do atípico ou do desviante é interrogada com base no contexto dos sepultamentos e na intencionalidade da prática.
