Sinopse  

O volume atual examina os mitos do estado desde a Antiguidade até os tempos modernos e em vários contextos culturais e religiosos. Abre com uma tentativa teórica de definição do conceito de mito seguida de uma análise da posição durkheimiana sobre o tema em estudo. 

São apresentadas noções de estado, política e profecia no Antigo e no Novo Testamento, bem como vários mitos pré-históricos do estado, por ex. antigo Egito, o Império Romano e a tradição alemã pré-cristã. Além disso, as teorias islâmicas e cristãs ortodoxas do Estado são iluminadas. Como conclusão, é feita uma comparação entre diferentes sistemas políticos do Oriente e do Ocidente no que diz respeito à influência do mito e da religião.

O volume é baseado noa artigos lidos no Simpósio sobre o Mito do Estado, realizado em Åbo (Suecia) os dias 6 a 8 de setembro de 1971
