Sinopse 

Os ritos religiosos desempenham um papel fundamental na maioria das religiões e tradições espirituais do mundo. Para os pesquisadores da religião, eles oferecem uma fonte especialmente prolífica de conhecimento e dados devido ao seu caráter empírico – a maioria dos rituais é representada de uma forma ou doutra e pode, portanto, ser observada. A pesquisa etnográfica de diferentes contextos pode, ainda, ser comparada de forma académica, abrindo assim maiores possibilidades de pesquisa cumulativa.

Perspetivas históricas sobre rituais são apresentadas em artigos sobre antigos cultos gregos e romanos, bem como costumes pré-históricos germânicos e mitologia nórdica incluídos neste volume. Perspetivas teóricas são oferecidas de pontos de vista psicológicos e metodológicos e várias práticas contemporâneas de contextos hindus, muçulmanos, budistas e xamânicos são analisadas. Ao cunhar o termo ritualística, o volume também procura introduzir um novo paradigma para o estudo dos rituais.
