Sinopse  

Este volume é um levantamento de uma das práticas mais interessantes da diplomacia antiga: a doação ou troca de objetos simbólicos entendidos como presentes diplomáticos. Esse costume pode ser tão antigo quanto a humanidade, mas certamente pode ser rastreado até o surgimento das primeiras sociedades escritas. 

Após avaliar esse contexto, as contribuições do volume concentram-se numa época histórica transcendental: o período helenístico (do final do século IV A.C. ao final do século I A.C.), que se sobrepõe parcialmente à expansão da República Romana no Mediterrâneo. O livro reúne especialistas internacionais que abordam o assunto de diferentes perspetivas cronológicas, geográficas e temáticas. 

Uma proposta estimulante que abre novos pontos de vista para o estudo da Antiguidade e da História da Diplomacia. Ele fornece uma abordagem inovadora para o estudo da diplomacia antiga, com base em fatores condicionantes culturais e perceção subjetiva do presente e ilumina questões atuais, como o papel da diplomacia e do diálogo entre culturas como meio de resolução de conflitos.
