Acredita-se que a dispersão da família linguística indo-europeia a partir do terceiro milénio A.C tenha alterado dramaticamente a paisagem linguística da Europa. 

Presume-se que muitas das línguas preexistentes foram perdidas, uma vez que as línguas indo-europeias, incluindo o grego, o latim, o céltico, o germânico, o báltico, o eslavo e o arménio, dominam grande parte da Eurásia Ocidental desde os tempos históricos. 

Para elucidar os encontros linguísticos resultantes do processo de indo-europeização, este volume avalia a evidência lexical do contacto linguístico pré-histórico em múltiplos subgrupos indo-europeus, ao mesmo tempo que assume uma postura crítica em relação às abordagens que foram aplicadas a este problema no passado.
